Finalizado su doctorado, realizó una pasantía postdoctoral en University of Texas Medical Branch en USA, donde aprendió herramientas de Biología Molecular que actualmente usa en su investigación. Luego, realizó una pasantía en Indiana-Purdue University at Indianapolis, donde fue nombrado Profesor Asistente en Investigación. Allí, comenzó su investigación en transducción de señales y cáncer. En el año 2005, fue nombrado Profesor en University of California San Francisco, continuando su investigación en cáncer. En el 2010, se trasladó a Chile como Profesor del Departamento de Bioquímica de la UdeC. El Dr. Castro participa en docencia de pregrado y postgrado, comisiones de Doctorados nacionales, y en grupos de estudio de los programas DOD/USA y FONDECYT/Chile, desempeñándose en este último como director del grupo Biología 3 en el año 2018. Actualmente, es director del programa de Doctorado en Ciencias Biológicas de la UdeC
Mecanismos moleculares asociados a reprogramación metabólica en células de cáncer en respuesta a diferentes tipos de estrés.
Posibles implicancias terapéuticas en la inhibición de la función de componentes asociados a la regulación del metabolismo de las células de cáncer.
